Drainage plan of small coastal catchments

Torrential flooding MaremseFinished a Stormwater Drainage Plan of a coastal region in Catalonia covering 6 municipalities with a large number of small watercourses that conduct intermittent flows, often causing flooding problems with heavy torrential rainfalls at the end of the summer. Increasing land occupation and important infrastructures made it necessary to develop an integral plan of which the main objectives are:

  • The identification of black spots in the drainage network through modelling with a distributed hydrological model (Mike SHE) coupled with a 1-D hydrodynamic model for the watercourses using design storms and historical rainfall records.
  • Assessment of mitigation possibilities (retention, channeling,’space for river’), in accordance with the prior established protection levels and existing and future urban development.
